Hardware Removal For FBSS

Spinal Hardware

Man-made hardware is often used in spine surgery as a way to assist in healing or add support to the spine. The type of hardware varies between surgical procedures, with smaller hardware like screws and rods to more advanced hardware like artificial discs.

Although heavily researched, the use of hardware is not without its problems. The hardware can break down, dislodge, cause irritation, or simply not be the right choice for the body. No matter the issue, if the hardware leads to back pain, hardware removal surgery may be necessary to eliminate the problem.

About Hardware Removal Surgery

Hardware is used in many different types of spine surgeries. Some types of hardware are not necessarily designed to be permanent, used primarily to support the spine during the healing process. Other types of hardware are meant to permanently replace parts of your body. But all hardware has the potential for failure, including:

  • Failed Pedicle Screws
  • Failed Spinal Wires
  • Failed Artificial Discs
  • Failed Vertebral Cages
  • Failed Rods, and More

Each type of failed hardware can cause its own unique pains. Failed pedicle screws can pinch nerves. Artificial disc failure can trigger autoimmune responses, inflammation, infection, and other issues related to improper sizing.

When the hardware used in spine surgery fails, the most common course of action is hardware removal. Depending on the type of hardware, it may be possible to undergo only minimally invasive surgery. Some types of hardware can be removed while the patient is awake under mild sedation.

But others may require a more invasive procedure, depending on the recommendation of the surgeon and the cause of pain. If you were not a good candidate for hardware, your surgeon may recommend a new treatment to fix the failed back surgery. If you were a good candidate for hardware, hardware removal surgery may be all that is needed.
