ACL injuries or tears commonly occur during sports that involve sudden stops of changes in direction. An ACL injury can sometimes be treated with rest and rehabilitation exercises to regain range of motion and strength. However, if an ACL injury is sever, a surgery may be necessary to replace the torn ligament followed by rehabilition therapy. To schedule an appointment to fully assess your ACL injury, call one of the seven offices in Atlanta, Savannah, Conyers, Forest Park, Augusta, Macon, and Decatur, Georgia, or book an in-person or telemedicine appointment online today.
What is an ACL?
An ACL is the anterior cruciate ligament and one of the four major ligaments of the knee that helps connect your femur (thighbone) to your tibia (shinbone).
What are the symptoms of an ACL injury?
You should seek immediate care if any injury to your knees causes the following symptoms:
- Loud pop or “popping” sensation
- Severe pain
- Inability to continue activity
- Rapid swelling
- Loss of range of motion
- Unability to put pressure or weight on knee
- Insability
What treatments are available for an ACL injury?
Depending on the severity of the ACL injury, conservative or non-surgical modalities will be used before surgery is recommended. Non-surgical modalities include rest, ice, compression, elevation, injections, acupuncture, and rehabilitative therapy to help reduce pain, restore your knee’s functionality and range of motion, and strengthen muscles.
