What is Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) Treatment?

Our bone marrow has stem cells and a host of other cells that can help damaged tendons, ligaments, and joints heal. Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a patient’s own bone marrow to treat conditions like joint pain, tendon injuries, and osteoarthritis. BMAC is a concentrated solution of cells and proteins extracted from a patient’s bone marrow. The concentrate contains stem cells, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Cytokines are small proteins secreted by various cells in the body, primarily immune cells, that play crucial roles in regulating immune responses, inflammation, and other physiological processes

What are the benefits of BMAC treatment?

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate treatment can help patients who are not surgical candidates and those who do not want surgery. This treatment can help to heal injured tissues decreasing pain, improving function, and restoring quality of life. BMAC can help reduce inflammation and improve pain. It can also heal and strengthen tendons and ligaments, which cortisone injections can’t do.

How does this treatment work?

A board-certified provider extracts a liquid part of bone marrow from the Iliac crests, which are located near the gluteal regions of the hips, with a hollow needle. The sample is processed and distilled using a centrifuge to concentrate the bone marrow. An X-ray or ultrasound guidance are used to inject the BMAC into joints, tendons, intradiscal, and ligaments. The stem cells in BMAC replicate themselves into various types of tissues, which can help speed up the healing process and promote tissue growth.

What to expect from treatment?

Treatment success mainly depends on the extent of tissue damage present in the joint, tendon, or ligament. The sooner you seek treatment the better the response. It takes about 4-6 weeks before the symptoms start to improve. There is increased pain and soreness for about 1-2 weeks following the extraction and the injection. The improvement in symptoms can last 1-2 years or longer.
