What is Platelet Lysate Treatment?
Platelet Lysate treatment is an orthobiologics, regenerative medicine treatment that uses a patient’s blood by harnessing the growth factors to treat musculoskeletal diseases, nerve damage, pain, and injuries. The platelets in blood are concentrated to optimize for growth factors and proteins to inject the solution into the affected area.
What are the benefits of Platelet Lysate treatment?
The growth factors are released much faster when platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been processed to form Platelet Lysate. This helps with spinal conditions where a herniated or extruded disc compresses or inflames a spinal nerve. This treatment is better suited for spine issues because the discs and the spinal nerves are not in a distinct closed space. While PRP can help with some spinal problems such as facet arthritis and internal disc disruption, Platelet Lysate is better suited to herniated discs and spinal stenosis.
How does this treatment work?
A board-certified provider extracts a patient’s blood and distilled using a centrifuge to concentrate and rupture the platelets to release their growth factors and then applied directly to the affected area. The direct application of growth factors can promote healing of the damaged spinal nerve and removal of herniated disc material by the body’s immune cells, which can help speed up the healing process and promote tissue growth.
What to expect from treatment?
Treatment success mainly depends on the extent of tissue damage present in the joint, tendon, or ligament. Overall, Platelet Lysate is typically given with other forms of regenerative injections. This treatment can shorten the healing of an extruded disc from 6 months to 2-3 months. The sooner you seek treatment the better the response. It takes about 4-6 weeks before the symptoms start to improve. There is increased pain and soreness for about 1-2 weeks following the extraction and the injection. The improvement in symptoms can last 1-2 years or longer.
